Americans fear the worst: all these products will soon be hard to get (or insanely expensive)

If you thought supermarket prices here were already high, things are even worse in America. Import tariffs on Mexican, Canadian, and Chinese products threaten to take a substantial bite out of American grocery budgets. And that’s while prices are already through the roof. From guacamole to tequila: these eight products will soon either become unaffordable or simply impossible to find.

8 products that will be hard to get in America

1. Fresh vegetables

Around 63% of all fresh vegetables in the US come from Mexico. Tomatoes, bell peppers, lettuce… everything will become significantly more expensive. So if people there already thought a simple salad cost an arm and a leg, they’d better prepare for horror prices in the vegetable aisle…

2. Avocados from Mexico

Americans love their avocado toast, but that party is almost over. 90% of avocados come from Mexico, and import tariffs could drive prices up significantly. With the import tariffs looming, avocados could become unaffordable—not exactly a pleasant prospect in a country where guacamole is eaten in abundance.

3. Tequila

Tequila lovers should also be worried. Imports of spirits from Mexico will be heavily taxed, affecting not only consumers but also the American hospitality sector, which is still recovering from the pandemic. A margarita will therefore become not only scarcer but also more expensive.

4. Sugar

Mexico accounts for around 15% of total US sugar imports. That may not sound like much, but it amounts to millions of tons of sugar per year.

5. Fresh flowers

Anyone wanting to buy a bouquet for Valentine’s Day could be out of luck. Many cut flowers in the US come from Canada, and if those imports become more expensive, the prices of roses and other flowers could skyrocket. Buying a romantic bouquet? Only if you bring a very full wallet.

6. Meat from Canada

Canadian meat is an important part of the American meat industry. According to the US Meat and Export Federation, import tariffs on live animals and meat products could lead to significant shortages. That means a juicy steak or hamburger could soon become more expensive than ever.

7. Fresh fruit

From strawberries to winter fruit: a large proportion of fresh fruit in the US comes from Mexico. If it is taxed, consumers will either have to pay much more or settle for a more limited selection. According to experts, a shift toward domestic production could be possible, but that would mean investing in greenhouses and higher costs for consumers.

8. European (sparkling) wine

If Trump’s plans go ahead, the famous Italian prosecco—and every other (sparkling) wine from Europe—will probably suddenly become much more expensive too. That’s why Americans are stocking up on prosecco en masse.

It’s clear: from a weekly avocado toast to an ice-cold margarita on Friday night—everything is getting more expensive. The import tariffs mean Americans will have to dig deep into their pockets or simply go without certain products.
