Another 7 Food Hacks That Are Complete Nonsense

Wouldn’t it be great if everything you read on the internet were true? That you really would receive a huge inheritance from an unknown uncle in Africa, that five minutes of ab exercises every day would give you a six-pack and that you could prevent avocados from turning brown with lemon juice. We’re here to dispel the illusion: these seven food hacks are complete nonsense – although we’re still not sure about the inheritance.

Peeling eggs easily with baking soda
Adding a teaspoon of baking soda to the water when you boil eggs is supposed to make them easier to peel. Turns out, that’s a myth. Shocking eggs under cold water helps; this hack is just a waste of baking soda. That splash of vinegar in the cooking water doesn’t help either, by the way.
Making a grilled cheese in a toaster
Super easy: put bread with ham and cheese in the toaster and watch a delicious grilled cheese pop back up. Just don’t: the dripping cheese will ruin your toaster, and with a bit of bad luck you’ll cause a short circuit. Pan-fried grilled cheese sandwiches taste much better, and otherwise you can always rely on the old-fashioned sandwich iron.
Squeezing a lemon with kitchen tongs
Do you have one of those handy kitchen tongs for fishing hot things out of a pan or the deep fryer? You can also use them to squeeze a lemon. At least, that’s what people claim. It doesn’t work. Lots of waste, very little lemon juice. What does work: heat lemons in the microwave for 10 seconds on the highest setting, and you’ll get more juice out of them.
Using an apple slicer for potato wedges
Do you have one of those handy apple slicers that you place over an apple to cut out the core and divide the apple into six pieces? Supposedly, you can also use it to cut attractive pieces of potato. But in practice, the apple slicer turns out not to be nearly sharp enough to cut a potato.
A potato to absorb the salt
Have you made your soup too salty? Add a peeled, raw potato, let it simmer for a while and fish it out again. The potato is supposed to absorb the salt. Well, that’s the idea, but it doesn’t work. You can rescue overly salty soup by discarding some of the liquid and adding water.
Shaking off garlic skins
Can you remove the skin from a clove of garlic by shaking it back and forth in a jar? Unless your garlic is so dry that the skins fall off easily, not really. And garlic that old shouldn’t really be eaten at all. Good garlic is slightly sticky, so you definitely won’t shake the skin off that easily.
Lemon juice on the avocado
Does a little lemon juice protect an avocado? Does it prevent the avocado from discoloring? Unfortunately, that’s not true. You do ruin the avocado’s flavor with the sour juice, though, so you might as well stop doing this.
