At this butcher’s shop you’ll find the Tastiest Meatball of 2023

There are many roads that lead to the tastiest meatball, but there is one butcher’s shop that is truly worth the detour. Slagerij Jan de Rooij from Berkel en Rodenrijs is the winner of the Tastiest Meatball 2023.

Every year, it is awarded: the prize for the Tastiest Meatball. 10 finalists competed for the honour, and the expert jury, which judged the meatballs on taste, aroma, colour, appearance, composition and preparation, has reached its decision: Slagerij Jan de Rooij wins the title of Tastiest Meatball 2023. The artisanal meatballs from the family business came out on top in the judging at the professional competition organised by trade association Koninklijke Nederlandse Slagers.
The award ceremony took place today (26 September 2023) at the VAS trade fair (the association that has represented the interests of artisanal butchers since 1973) in Amsterdam.
A tasty and honest meatball
“Pure craftsmanship! Artisanal, authentic, beautifully round, incredibly tender when you bite into it, and with a beautiful pattern on the surface of the meatball. The ingredients are perfectly balanced and the preparation is more than up to standard. Chapeau!”, said an enthusiastic jury about the winning meatball.
Slagerij Jan de Rooij reached the final several times in the Great Grill Sausage Test and the Spareribs Trophy, but had never previously reached the final of the Tastiest Meatball. Wim de Rooij remained very calm about it: “It’s really nice to win this prize. There’s no secret to our meatball; it’s simply a tasty and honest meatball.”
The second prize went to Keurslager Van Hest from Goirle, while Slagerij Aad Groenewegen from Honselersdijk received the third prize.
