Strange but true: eat a piece of pork in a TikTok video and then disappear behind bars for two years. This happened to Indonesian influencer Lina Lutfiawati. But what exactly did she do, and why is it a criminal offence?

Lina Lutfiawati is a 33-year-old influencer who was on holiday in Bali in March earlier this year. There, she came across a well-known pork dish and was curious to try it. She did so while filming it, intending to post the video on TikTok.

Now you’re thinking, no problem, right? But because Lina identifies as Muslim, things are slightly different. According to Islam, Muslims are not permitted to eat pork. Muslims and Jews, incidentally, only eat animals that are ‘clean’ (animals that eat only plants, such as cows and sheep; pigs are unclean because they also eat small animals). A large part of Indonesia’s population is Muslim, and the video was therefore not well received at all. Not only because she ate pork, but also because Lina says ‘Bismillah’ before eating, which means ‘in the name of God’. And saying that before consuming Haram food?

The influencer subsequently received a great deal of criticism. Because of her actions and statements in the video, she was found guilty of ‘inciting hatred’ against religious individuals and groups. As a result, she has now been sentenced to two years in prison and fined 15,000 euros.
