The drive-thru (or, properly written, drive through) has by now become thoroughly established among fast-food-loving people in the Netherlands. Although there will always be people who hold everything up because they want to pay forty-two euros with saved-up five-cent coins, many of you convenience lovers are more than happy to drive past the speaker post so that, a few metres farther on, a bag of fries and burgers can be casually slid through the car window. But it can also be done like this…
At the FLOAT-through! Because if, while canoeing along a German river, you suddenly get an irresistible craving for a QP with cheese or a Big Mac, you simply paddle past this special Golden Arches pick-up point.
McBoat life
In Hamburg (ha!), you’ll find the world’s only ‘float-through’ in a small side channel of the River Elbe. Entirely appropriately called the McBoat, this special McDonald’s location makes sure your order is handed to you straight from the jetty into your little boat.
Boating and eating
Previously, there was, as with regular drive-thrus, a post with an intercom, but because everyone is super-modern now, the post is gone and you place your order through the McDonald’s app on your phone. The McBoat is closed during the winter months, but open 24 hours a day in summer. Say whut? Surely that’s for all those late-night boaters? Either way, boat life gets a special twist for McDonald’s lovers – now you just have to be careful not to drop your phone into the water while ordering. Ahoy!
