Snackspert is not amused: McDonald’s new burger is boring and dry

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his lifetime, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week. This week on the menu: two veggie burgers and an incredibly delicious portion of fries from Ghent.

McDonald’s McPlant

Yes, the McPlant. McDonald’s has finally given in: putting a plant-based burger on the menu. They had to, especially because Burger King is way ahead in this area. But here’s the strange thing: the McPlant isn’t actually that plant-based. It has ‘regular’ cheddar on it—why not use a vegan version instead? On top of that, they claim they can’t call it vegan-certified either, which is a weird story. Ridiculous. The burger itself also leaves something to be desired: the Beyond Burger ‘meat’ here is really quite dry. Whereas the supermarket version is juicy and tender, this one seems to have simply been reheated. In other words: poor preparation. Add a fairly uninspired sandwich sauce and ketchup on top and, unfortunately, you have a very mediocre burger. You could say it was deliciously disgusting, but given the expectations, I really expected much more. ⭐️⭐️

A Juliëntje from Stefano’s Place, Ghent

I LOVE snack bars that have really crazy dishes on their menus, and there are far too few of them in the Netherlands. They’re rare; every now and then one pops up—like De Buurman in Amsterdam, where you can order a burger with a cheese soufflé. But in Belgium, the chip shops are packed with crazy snacks. Take the Juliëntje in Ghent, an institution in the student city. What pizza Marjolein is to Utrecht, the Juliëntje is to Ghent. I got it at Stefano’s Place: this box of fries with satay seasoning, stewed-meat sauce, mayonnaise, fried onion and viandelles. Does it beat a nine-course menu at a Michelin-starred restaurant? In terms of flavour, perhaps not; in terms of enjoyment, thank goodness it does. What a disgustingly delicious box of food porn this is. The combination of viandelle, stew sauce and mayonnaise is golden. So deliciously dark, you know. Like drinking a 10% beer. In my opinion, the fries could have been a little crispier, because the bottom was a soggy mess. But hey, you can’t have everything in life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Vada Pav from Dutch Dabbawala, Amsterdam

When you see this photo, you’re probably thinking: huh? What’s that? Well, let me make a comparison with TV series. You could watch the third season of Friends for the ninth time, but you could also try out a new series. You should do that when you’re in the mood for a burger but feel like trying something new. For example, try the Vada Pav from Dutch Dabba Wala in Amsterdam: a burger topped not with meat, but with a deep-fried potato dumpling that is exceptionally well seasoned. Add sharp red onion and a mildly spicy sauce underneath, and you have a very surprising bun that will spontaneously make you sing ‘hello India’. Maybe it could have been a little creamier, but that’s a minor point. So, what are we all going to do now? Check at your local Indian shop—or simply at Dutch Dabba Wala if you live in the capital—to see whether they have Vada Pav too. You’re welcome. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
