Snackspert is wildly enthusiastic about La Fiorita’s spaghetti ball in the Jordaan

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his life, suspects there’s more mayonnaise than blood in his body, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week. This week: a top week with a ball, burger, and sandwich.

Chook Norris sandwich from Dignita, Amsterdam

The Chook Norris sandwich from Dignita, which I gave 5 stars, was—and still is—a huge success. Never before have I been tagged so often in stories by followers who also enjoyed the sandwich, for which I’m incredibly grateful—I’m ridiculously happy about it. But credit also goes to Dignita for coming up with such an insane sandwich. That’s also why I was so curious about their kimcheeeeze toastie, which is incidentally much cheaper and far more filling than the average toastie you get in your work cafeteria. This toastie is once again magnificent. And what an unprecedented mix of flavors—how do you come up with this? Green kimchi combined with the lovely texture of bok choy, a delicious boiled egg, perfectly melted Taleggio cheese, deliciously spicy gochujang mayo (Korean red pepper), and so on. I actually get turned on just thinking about it again. The milk bread is like a sponge, so wonderfully soft, though I would have liked it juuuust a little thinner. But that’s really just complaining for the sake of complaining. This toastie is a winner—you may go ahead again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Vegan long chicken and vegan nuggets from Burger King
There they are! The vegan long chicken and vegan nuggets from the Vegetarian Butcher and Burger King. However, the vegan claim isn’t completely 100%—they emphasize that themselves—because the snacks are prepared in the same environment as the meat products. So much for the factual announcement. What you really want to know, of course: is it any good? At first glance, it looks like my face with a massive hangover after a night out, but believe me: it’s perfectly fine on the inside. In fact, the plant-based long chicken is genuinely great. I seriously checked three times to make sure there wasn’t real chicken in it, because the difference was barely noticeable. And that doesn’t happen often. Look, purely objectively, it’s just a tasty burger, nothing more than that, but I’m hugely impressed by the patty. I doff my hat to it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’m slightly less enthusiastic about the plant-based nuggets. Perhaps that has to do with the preparation, because I think they spent too long in the fryer. The crust is far too hard, and the ‘meat’ is a little dried out. You expect something juicy like the vegan long chicken, but this is anything but. Perhaps they’ll taste much better next time, after being prepared properly. But then again, a review is a snapshot. Tough luck. ⭐️⭐️1/2

The spaghetti ball from La Fiorita, Amsterdam

I have the tip for this weekend. So, do I have your attention now? Good, because for me this is genuinely the most surprising snack I’ve eaten in ages—if not months. This was the spaghetti ball at La Fiorita in the Jordaan in Amsterdam, and from now on it’s mandatory to pick one up if you’re even remotely nearby. For a very reasonable price, you get a lovely, generously sized spaghetti ball containing delicious firm strands, the tastiest tomato sauce, and fior di latte mozzarella—the kind we usually know from better restaurants in Italy—along with a wonderfully mild basil mayo that will spontaneously make you start singing in Italian. The crust isn’t too hard, but because of that firm spaghetti, that’s actually a good thing—it’s all about balance, people. I could name 1,000 more things to explain why this ball is so delicious, but I can also just do this: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
