Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week.

Fajita chorizo burrito from Tomatillo, Amsterdam

It’s only because nightclubs are still closed thanks to coronavirus that you wouldn’t have believed me if I’d jokingly said this was the result of a Sunday night at Boode in Bathmen—you can’t fool me. But no, this is the fajita chorizo (but made with beef, yes indeed) burrito. In this case, fajita means you get roasted bell pepper and onion instead of rice. Personally, I think that’s much better, because I find rice a little too neutral a flavour for a burrito that looks as if you’re going to the circus three-quarters of an hour later to breathe fire from your arse—because hey, it’s 2020. But jokes aside: Tomatillo is rightly one of my favourite burrito spots, because the quality is genuinely top-notch. The meat is nicely salty and wonderfully spicy thanks to the jalapeño sauce, but not too spicy thanks to the bell pepper and onion. A small downside is the amount of melted cheese; there can always be more. I want to cut a burrito in half and have the cheese drip off it, you know? A drip, but in a good way. Then I’m truly a happy person. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Patty melt, mushroom bitterballen and kimchi croquettes from The Beef Chief, Amsterdam

When I saw that The Beef Chief in Amsterdam had this patty melt on the menu, I knew immediately: I had to go again. It felt as if I had to catch the last train home because I was afraid it would sell out that evening, but thank goodness I was still able to order one. Because yes, this looks like your favourite porn actor or actress in action, but as a grilled sandwich. I could call it a toastie burger: beautifully cooked meat, perfectly melted cheddar and a fantastic crunchy bun. And then dipping it in gravy, because why not, right? I did notice one small downside: where’s the sour or sweet element in this patty melt? Something to give this sandwich more flavour? Tomato, onion compote, whatever. That might have made it truly perfect, but hey, it was still delicious. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Also delicious: the mushroom bitterballen and the kimchi croquettes. Set the traffic light on fire with my mouth because holy moly, the roof was on fire in there. And in a very good way. The kimchi croquette may be small, but it’s packed with flavour and gives your mouth a spicy kick. It could have been slightly crispier, but that’s the only thing. I was also pleasantly surprised by the mushroom bitterbal, because the flavour wasn’t too overpowering. For one person, that’s a plus; for another, a minus. You can decide for yourself this time, but I find mushrooms rather heavy in themselves. Hence. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Triple Pepperoni pizza from New York Pizza

It’s quite a leap, going from Italy back to the Netherlands. Especially in culinary terms. After eating this pizza, I was asked: mate, surely you can’t take a pizza like this seriously after a holiday in Italy? Yes, I can. First: I’m doing it for you. Second: you should never compare Italian pizzas with American pizzas. Frank de Boer was a different footballer from his twin brother Ronald de Boer, after all. It’s also like comparing a Jonagold apple with a Pink Lady apple, right? American pizzas are genuinely junk-food pizzas; Italian ones are more culinary pizzas. See? The fact that I enjoyed the pizza is clear from the fact that I had accidentally taken two slices before taking the photo. Sorry about that, but when I opened the box, I saw a huge greasy feast that I had to get into my mouth. I honestly think this Triple Pepperoni pizza from New York Pizza makes me gain more weight than two weeks of eating well in Italy, but jokes aside: I enjoyed it. It’s such a delicious junk-food bite that you’ve finished after a few minutes and then think you should eat a salad the next day. The pepperoni has a satisfyingly rough flavour, the salami is wonderfully full of garlic, although the chorizo has a strange smoky flavour. I don’t know what it is, but it’s not unpleasant. But super delicious? Not quite. It’s simply a perfectly tasty, not particularly special pizza. Handy if you’re hungover soon, because the amount of fat on this pizza will help you recover. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
