Baking ice cream in the oven: it’s possible and insanely delicious

Some things simply don’t go together in our minds. Like putting ice cream in an oven: you don’t do that. Right? But I have news for you. Baking ice cream in an oven actually works really well. In fact, it’s DIVINE.

It’s called ‘ice cream bread’ and it’s a huge hit on TikTok. Some TikTok videos about ice cream bread have millions of views, with the most popular one getting no fewer than 22 million. If something goes that viral, it has to be good. At least, that’s been our experience when it comes to TikTok. Crispy croissants, pesto eggs and McDonald’s loaded fries: all TikTok recipes we tried and absolutely loved. So expectations for this ice cream bread were high.
Ice cream and self-raising flour
Well, I’m exaggerating a little. When I first saw ice cream bread popping up, I was a bit sceptical. Why would you put ice cream in the oven? It’ll just melt and turn into one big sticky mess, won’t it? It became more interesting when I saw that you use self-raising flour to turn it into a bread-like substance. I should have known, of course, because it isn’t called ice cream bread for nothing. My scepticism slowly faded. I even started really craving it when I saw that you only need 2 ingredients for this TikTok recipe. Ice cream and self-raising flour, that is. If you want to make it extra festive, you can sprinkle some coloured sprinkles on top. Perhaps better known as ‘disco dip’.
How to make ice cream bread
First, preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, let half a litre of ice cream of your choice melt. You can do this in the microwave, but if you have a little patience, your ice cream will melt ‘naturally’ within half an hour. Then add approximately 160 grams of self-raising flour to the bowl of melted ice cream. Carefully mix this together, preferably with a hand mixer. After about 2 minutes, you’ll see that it becomes super thick. Pour your ice cream mixture into a baking tin, sprinkle with sprinkles if desired and bake in the oven for approximately 45 minutes.
If you don’t have self-raising flour, mixing flour with a teaspoon of baking soda also works! Because that’s basically what self-raising flour is. Remember that you can use one sachet of baking powder (15 grams) for every 500 grams of flour. Enjoy!
