Burger King comes up with the chip butty! Brilliant invention or terrible spin-off?

Burger King in New Zealand has added a new burger to the menu. For £2, you can get the chip butty. Burger buns with nothing but fries on them. Sounds familiar? Of course: they’ve been eating it in England for years!

Household name
“A burger with fries” isn’t an unusual order. Only usually, the fries are next to your burger, not on top of it. In England, they know better: the chip butty has been a household name there for generations.
Energy boost
A slice of white bread, fries on top, mayo & ketchup, and then press it all nice and flat with a second slice of white bread. I already ate this as a child in the English countryside. Recently, the butty came back into my life thanks to a British colleague with whom I often work late shifts behind the bar. Around midnight, when the staff meal was already seven hours ago but you still have another 4 hours to work, we eat a chip butty and can power through those final hours.
Chip butty renaissance
So Burger King is reinventing this sandwich, which is prompting quite a few hilarious reactions on Twitter from chip butty connoisseurs. They naturally know where the chip butty REALLY comes from, and how it is REALLY meant to be prepared. And that’s in the English countryside, in a roadside pub—not in a Burger King in New Zealand.
Groundbreaking lads. What next? Peas that have been mushed up?

In 1620, The Mayflower brought pilgrims from England to the New World.

Online reviews don’t mince their words either. Judging by the photo from the New Zealand magazine The Spinoff, this really is the saddest chip butty even I, a Dutch person, have ever seen. I count only 9 fries. The inventor of the legendary sandwich must be turning in his grave.
