Can it please stop? The funny menu is actually never funny
If you’re craving scrambled eggs and have to order ‘egg egg egg we’re so happy’, then that’s never funny. And the same goes for all those supposedly witty menus. Can it please stop?
Some restaurant owners or chefs think that an ordinary, clear menu isn’t enough, and that they can do something extra with it. No, we don’t mean a menu designed like a newspaper, written on a blackboard or printed on the back of a clog, but a menu full of jokes and silly wordplay. Let’s be clear: if the menu says ‘cluck cluck chickie with sauce on a stick’, we’ll simply order chicken satay anyway, and would rather not come back here next time.
Crazy Goat
A few years ago, Hiske Versprille listed the restaurants with the worst painfully unfunny menus for Parool. At Blushing, Gordon’s restaurant, the menu featured ‘Get out of your dip with the vegetable chip’ and ‘Crazy Goat Sandwich’ – utterly embarrassing, right? And sure enough, you can still order ‘egg egg egg we’re so happy’ at Blushing. Other offenders according to Hiske: restaurant Lieve in Amsterdam with ‘Hachemenou’ and ‘Dancing in your Pastinaki’, and Linke Loetje in Schagen, with ‘Martijn Krabbétjes’ (spareribs) and ‘Geert Wild Boar’.
Too lame
Why? That’s really the only question. Why would you, as a restaurant, want a menu full of this kind of nonsense? If you work in the service industry, you’ll obviously get completely fed up with those lame dad jokes all evening, and if you’re a guest, ordering from it is simply embarrassing. In short: can this kind of ridiculous menu please stop?
