Can we stop sending a Tikkie for a single coffee?

Adeline (nickname: Eddie) loves food, a lot and often, both at home and out. Usually that goes well, but sometimes it doesn’t. In the series Eddie’s food frustrations, you can read about the latter. This time, we need to talk about the absurd Tikkie behavior of some people. This time, we need to talk about the absurd Tikkie behavior of some people.

Should never have been sent
I could write an ode to Tikkie; that’s how happy I am with the app. This payment method makes it impossible for bad debtors (like me) to get away with it. In my case, it’s because of my acute forgetfulness the moment I get up from a table somewhere, but it’s also ideal when it comes to freeloaders who never pay the bill. Often, at a dinner, we send a Tikkie in the app immediately after the bill arrives—very convenient to settle up right away. I’m talking about the three-course-meal-and-bottles-of-wine kind of dining out. So far, I wholeheartedly applaud it all. Except for the Tikkies that should never have been sent. Yes, because those exist too. And they are sent remarkably often around visits to restaurants.
Cheap behavior
Imagine this. You have a little time between appointments and text an acquaintance to ask if they’re nearby. As luck would have it, they’re sitting in the sun on a terrace around the corner and ask you to join them. You quickly sit down, drink a single espresso, catch up for a bit, and are back on your way to your next appointment fifteen minutes later. Always nice when something works out so spontaneously. Until you look at your phone at the end of the street and see an awkward Tikkie already popping up proudly on the screen. Not only do they want you to pay your two-euro-fifty espresso, but they also want to split the forty-cent tip. People, can we act normally for a moment and stop sending this kind of Tikkie?
Tikkies are absolutely allowed, but let’s keep things reasonable. If you have to throw those few euros back over someone’s fence immediately, that’s just a little stingy. What happened to you paying once and them paying once? That back-and-forth arrangement always worked perfectly and still works excellently in the age of Tikkies. You don’t have to settle everything down to the cent.
Extra mayonnaise
You might think this is the only Tikkie that shouldn’t exist, but unfortunately, it isn’t. Some rather curious Tikkie behavior has developed around restaurant visits. It’s not just those few coffees, which you can easily take turns paying for. It’s also the extra Tikkies because you happened to drink one more glass of something. I’d like to suggest that from now on, you simply meet these people at home (or not at all), although you might then risk having to pay for the frozen pizza and can of Heineken afterward. At least at a restaurant, you’re actually paying for something.
Don’t become a chav in the age of Tikkie, because there’s nothing wrong with continuing to behave a little socially. Except when it comes to those freeloaders, because you have so much catching up to do there that, with my permission, you may send an unlimited number of Tikkies for all that extra mayonnaise ordered.
