This fast-food chain is (surprisingly enough?) the most popular worldwide

Maybe you go to McDonald’s or Burger King every week, with the aim of boosting the global average. Then we have some news for you: these two players score less highly among the world’s population than the leader of the list of ‘Most popular fast-food brands in the world’…

Because the number-one spot is firmly held this year by Kentucky Fried Chicken, the chain founded in 1930 that has been the most sought-after in no fewer than 83 countries ever since.
Searching and snacking
This emerged from research by British company Business Financing, which used Google search data across various categories to map out what people search for most. And you can imagine that not all those people are simply Googling KFC to brush up on the company’s history. No, they’re obviously going there! Or ordering online.
Colourfully presented
And Business Financing takes that mapping quite literally and extensively. The graphic representation of their research produces a colourful image showing exactly which fast-food chain scores best in each country and continent. In the Netherlands, it’s McDonald’s, and the same goes for all of North America. China and Australia are also big fans, or at least of Big Macs and McNuggets. But with an overwhelming majority at global level, the fried-chicken makers still win.
Remarkable shift
KFC is the most popular in 83 countries, McDonald’s in 40. Burger King ranks fourth with 14 countries, and has Pizza Hut ahead of it, the chain that tops the list in 18 countries. According to Business Financing, it is particularly interesting that the top two look so different from last year. McDonald’s was then the ‘Most popular’ in 75 countries and dropped to 40, while KFC climbed from 65 to 83.
