Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week. This week, too, pleasure and sheer misery alternated once again.

Westland’s special frikandel salad

I finally worked up the courage to buy this special frikandel salad at the supermarket. It’s a bit like taking a dump in church: it’s just not right. But curiosity got the better of my judgment (as it often does in my life, RIP), so I picked up this one from Westland. And yes, it’s simply a disappointment. It has the spicy flavor of a special, but the frikandel flavor is nowhere to be found. And that could have been prevented; instead of using tiny pieces, they could have cut the frikandel into thin slices and put those in the salad. That way, you could bring out that cultural-heritage flavor much better. Now it’s like drinking a beer that’s 30% beer and 70% water. What a shame, although the onion on top was tasty. But anyway. ⭐️⭐️

King of the Beets burger from The Beef Chief, Amsterdam

It has been established for years that The Beef Chief in Amsterdam-Noord is the best burger joint in the Netherlands, if not Europe, and all this time I haven’t come across a single place that beats this burger joint. And that makes sense, because this place keeps outdoing itself. It had already been a year since my last visit, so it was high time to stop by again and try some new things, such as this King of the Beets: a burger with Emmental cheese, pickled beetroot, lettuce, and spicy habanero sauce. What a magical mix of ingredients. The combination of Emmental and pickled beetroot is a golden duo, like Memphis Depay and Donyell Malen were – oh no, terrible comparison. Sorry. If The Beef Chief had gone for cheddar, the slightly sour taste of the beetroot would have been far too intense. The mild Emmental, however, is like a soft little cushion for the beetroot to land on. Speaking of cushions: the meat is as tender as a cushion you’d find in the better hotels. And the bun is toasted wonderfully. What a burger. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Burger King cheese soufflés

Cheese soufflés at Burger King! I repeat: cheese soufflés at Burger King! While the big competitor with the big M is putting an old vegetarian burger back on the menu, only to make it disappear again and make lots of people cry, Burger King has been doing a fantastic job expanding its permanent menu since introducing the FreakingDel and the vegan burgers. So I was already very happy about the cheese soufflés! For a very reasonable price, you can get four that are at least freshly fried, nice and crispy, and deliciously cheesy. They don’t have that unmistakable cheese flavor you’re used to from the more luxurious soufflés, but for a major chain like Burger King, this is already quite something. And the size is perfect; you can play the hero by giving the last cheese soufflé to your loved one in exchange for a French kiss with melted cheese still on your tongue. There you go, tip of the day. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
