Snackspert is lyrical: ‘this is the best supermarket snack in croquette form ever!’

Old Amsterdam Kwekkenboom korket

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has already devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his life, suspects that there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and normally shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week. This time, the spotlight is on the cheese croquette of all cheese croquettes—pardon: croquettes—for which you’ll want to head straight to the supermarket!

Remia Special Chili fritessaus

Do you ever have that with certain people, where you think they’re actually really shitty and unpleasant? But as soon as you really meet them, they turn out to be pretty cool. You were, like, completely ready to tear that person apart—“yeah, that coffee with him/her was really shitty,” you know—but it turned into: “oh, the coffee with him/her was secretly really fun…” Just to make my point: I couldn’t wait to tear Remia’s Special Chili fritessaus apart. Just looking at it makes you think it belongs in the garbage bag rather than on your own dinner table. But I have to be honest: it’s actually tasty too. I don’t know what’s happening to me. It’s a slightly spicy and rich version of ravigote sauce, with pieces of pickle in it. Yum. The packaging says it’s ideal for burgers, but I think it’s actually a really good sauce to serve with fish. But maybe I’m saying something really crazy now. Or something completely brilliant—that’s also possible. The glass is half full, right? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kwekkeboom Old Amsterdam croquettes

Yes, hold on, this review is a matter of life and death, because Kwekkeboom and Old Amsterdam have finally turned the best supermarket snack ever into croquette form too! Stop the presses! Call the newspapers! I once awarded the Kwekkeboom Old Amsterdam bitterballen 5 stars, and yes, people, I could go on about them for a very long time, but these croquettes absolutely deserve the maximum number of stars too. What a wonderful coating, what insanely delicious and magical cheese on the inside. So creamy, so soft—it feels like getting a huge hug from your child, it’s that lovely. I’m over the moon. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

War fries, frikandel and souflesse from Friethuys Majo, Harderwijk

If you had to choose between a visit to the Dolfinarium or the snack bar, how much sauce would you want on your delicious frikandel? Apparently, Harderwijk is home to a really nice snack bar called Majo, where unfortunately I didn’t go for an exciting order on your behalf, but instead got an old-fashioned portion of war fries and a bowl of mayo with frikandel, plus a souflesse. I have to say that the fries are very well cooked: nice and crispy, with an excellent potato flavor, but I find the satay sauce in the war fries a little too thick and too mild. The onions and mayo make up for a lot, but this could still be much better. Nevertheless, this is certainly a good portion. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

And then the frikandel and the souflesse—those two seemed to have been fried in old frying oil. That could be right, because it was around closing time when I ordered these snacks, and logically I was the last customer. To change the oil just for me… Understandable, but it remains a downside. As if you still give Ukraine 1 point because they were level in the 85th minute. Yeah, right. The frikandel is fine, but the souflesse had a somewhat dark flavor on the outside. Such a shame!
