Snackspert’s week: “This is the perfect and tastiest chicken burger ever”

Toktok kipburger

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his lifetime, suspects there’s more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week. And if he may give you one tip: squealing tires all the way to Toktok!

Perfect chicken burger, Toktok at Pong, Amsterdam

Let’s celebrate the start of the weekend and spring with a good, seriously sexy serving of food porn. This is Toktok, a fried chicken joint located in the very charming Pong (you can play table tennis there—how cool!!) in Amsterdam. And actually, you can already see from this photo that this is simply a perfect chicken burger. Is it the best ever? Maybe. Because the chicken is unbelievably tender, the crispy coating looks and feels so good it could take part in Amsterdam Fashion Week, and that bun—man, what a wonderful little cushion. The cheese embraces the meat as if it were meant to be, something that isn’t a given when you eat out somewhere. It has a wonderfully spicy flavor that makes your taste buds dance the tango. This is perfection. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

And then those chicken tenders. Yes, I absolutely had to make sure I wasn’t dealing with a lucky hit. But these are just as tender. And almost just as tasty. They went a little overboard with the spices in the coating (a bit too salty), but that doesn’t matter. Unbelievable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Frikandel speciaal and oorlog fries, Hans & Frietje, Loenen aan de Vecht

Hans & Frietje in Loenen aan de Vecht deserves a yellow card for this terrible (but okay, secretly kind of funny) pun, but thank God they know how to fry things excellently. It was a very pleasant pit stop on the way home. A frikandel speciaal with a special frikandel sauce (more on that later) and oorlog fries. Some will say: what a shame it’s in a container. I say: I actually don’t mind—maybe also because I simply like to stay in control of how much sauce I want on my fries. And these fries are genuinely very good, so good that they don’t need a lot of sauce. Excellent crunch, a good potato flavor, and not too thin either. The frikandel, on the other hand, was a little too coarse in texture, but the special sauce made up for a lot. Hans & Frietje has created its own sauce, whose ingredients unfortunately remain a secret.
It’s a slightly sweeter version of curry sauce, with a hint of mayonnaise in it. Surprisingly delicious, but I still would have liked it to have a little more kick. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it. You can go kiss someone in Loenen, but you’d be better off spooning with a frikandel. Your turn now. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hela sauces

When it comes to the best curry sauce, you’re either Team Hela or Team Oliehoorn. Now I personally find it difficult to choose (as if you had to say which of the two is your favorite child, you know), but luckily this review is about something completely different. It’s about Hela herb ketchup curry extra hot, herb ketchup garlic, and herb ketchup peanut. And they’re all vegan. Let me deal with them one by one, because this is serious business for everyone who loves sauce in their house. First up: extra hot. It’s the formidable curry, but “extra” spicy. Well, let’s just call it spicy, because I wasn’t on fire. It’s perfectly spicy, useful if you want to make your next trip to the bathroom a pleasant one. Pretty decent, a solid pass. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Then the herb ketchup peanut! I can tell you, this one is fantastic. It’s the best of both worlds and, strangely enough, it mixes incredibly well: the flavor of herb ketchup and peanut sauce. Anyone who says that can’t work is out, because it’s 2021 by now. Boom. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

And finally, the herb ketchup garlic. It reminded me of the Rivella commercial: strange, but good. In terms of flavor, it’s quite nice—the garlic flavor is excellent—but the texture of the sauce puts me off a little. The sauce isn’t very liquid and is somewhat grainy, which feels a little strange in the mouth. Perhaps a tip for further developing this product. Nevertheless: a pass. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
