Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in style? Naturally, with a Margarita; one of the world’s favorite cocktails made with Cointreau

Sombrero on your head, enchiladas in the oven and, above all: an ice-cold Margarita in your hand! Because today we’re celebrating the Mexican national holiday Cinco de Mayo. So get that bottle of Cointreau and the tequila ready.

Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrated every year on May 5, celebrating Mexico’s cultural and culinary heritage. Not only in Mexico, either. This national holiday is also hugely popular in the United States—not surprising when you know that many Latinos live in the US.
On Cinco de Mayo, Americans with Latin American roots celebrate the holiday of their heritage, while for the rest of the nation it is, just as it is for us, above all a very good excuse to eat lots of tacos and drink Margaritas made with Cointreau.
Party guest numéro uno: the Margarita!
Because of its Mexican roots—and as a tribute to Mexico’s national drink, si si tequila—the Margarita received the official title of Cinco de Mayo drink, and is served all over the world on this festive day in May even more than on any other day of the year. So get the bottles of Cointreau and tequila ready for a Mexican evening!
A particularly good idea
We all have stylish Margarita Sames to thank for being so fond of this cocktail classic. It was she who—in 1948, in Acapulco—came up with the brilliant idea of mixing two of her favorite drinks, tequila and Cointreau, during one of her extravagant parties. The Margarita cocktail was born, named after its creator, Margarita Sames.

This senorita needs a Margarita
I’d love to fly to this paradisiacal place RIGHT NOW, where they have a Margarita Hotline and you’re just one phone call away from a freshly made cocktail—and that all day long. But I don’t need to explain why that isn’t really an option right now. Dry your tears and get to work yourself!
If life gives you limes, make Margaritas
And the great thing is, making a Margarita is not difficult at all. Cointreau, blanco tequila, fresh lime juice and a salted rim; it’s a childishly simple yet ingenious recipe for a super cocktail with fans all over the world.
Chippin’, dippin’, Margarita sippin’ in 4 steps
What do you need? Margarita glasses (coupe-shaped with an extra ‘step’ above the stem) or champagne coupe glasses, a cocktail strainer, 30 ml of Cointreau (available at Gall&Gall), 50 ml of tequila, 20 ml of fresh lime juice, ice and some salt.
Step 1: Add a salted rim to the glass, for example with pink Himalayan salt (regular salt works too).
Step 2: Put all the ingredients in a shaker and fill it with ice.
Step 3: Shake until the mixture is thoroughly chilled.
Step 4: Pour the cocktail into the glass through a cocktail strainer. Cheers!
