Thirsty tales

Chance to win free beer if you have this haircut

Guys: the one and only glorious mullet – who still has one? You hardly ever see them on the streets anymore, even though there were years when many a guy (or kid) sported spiky or short hair on top and a luxuriantly long mane underneath: at the nape of the neck, over the shoulders, sometimes halfway down the back if they were truly committed. Just when you’re thinking ‘never again’, I can tell you this: this beer brand is campaigning for the return of the mullet!

I wouldn’t quickly call this haircut a Dutch mullet myself, because I went to a secondary school (not in The Hague) with mostly Americans, and many of the boys there had one too. So believe me when I say this was quite an international trend, and among those Americans it was mainly the rougher surf dudes who asked their barber for this hairstyle.

In any case, it’s a clearly defined target audience, but this beer brand’s invitation extends further: anyone who grows/cuts a mullet and keeps it up for at least a year will be richly rewarded!

Oldie but goodie

With, yes, beer. The American beer brand Natural Light has been around since 1977, and began positioning itself with a light beer. Since then, they’ve branched out into flavored beers and the (unfortunately) inevitable hard seltzer, but suddenly the marketing department had the idea that perhaps everything used to be better. The first step: a limited-edition new can with a retro look, bringing the old logo and emblem out of retirement, in a beautiful, slightly tapered shape.

You have to make some sacrifices

And it’s not just the can’s appearance that has to go retro; if Natural Light has its way, its drinkers will go fully retro too. The brand promises that if you get a mullet styled and maintain it, you’ll have a chance to win a year’s worth of visits to the barber (just for the ends, of course, to keep everything in shape) as well as free beer!

Are barbers ready for this?

So, if you live in America and are old enough to drink, you can enter via social media (where you’ll of course have to show off your haircut every month). We’re very curious to see whether this hairstyle trend might blow over to the Netherlands again (and whether we should be worried about that). Oh well, as long as your hair looks good, right? Cheers!
