Chef’s Table Barbecue: the ultimate cooking show that will make you HUNGRY

Barbecue spareribs

If you’re completely done with the standard cooking shows where it’s all about faster, prettier and more of the same, you’ll feast on Chef’s Table Barbecue: colorful characters and delicious food, that’s all there is to it. And at the same time, that’s exactly enough.

How many cooking shows à la Masterchef do we know by now? Contestants race against the clock, the judges talk about a ‘crunch’ and an ‘acidity’, nervous hands fumble with scallops, quinoa and the inevitable chocolate moelleux. Is that really good cooking, if you win a competition like that? The Chef’s Table series on Netflix takes a different approach. Famous chefs are interviewed about their motivations. Where do they find their inspiration? What do they find interesting and innovative?

Thermometer? Not needed

The sequel, Chef’s Table Barbecue, is based on the same idea. A few chefs who work with extraordinary dedication with meat and coals, each in a different way. The first episode is a portrait of Tootsie, an 85-year-old woman who works during the day as a kind of caretaker, and is a pitmaster in the evening. A thermometer? She doesn’t use one; she feels with her hands whether the meat has reached the right temperature. In the second episode, Lennox has his say: he throws lettuce on the grill and makes desserts on the glowing coals. Beautiful images, inspiring stories.

No secrets

The voice-over in the trailer says it all: there are no secret preparations in the world of barbecue. Experienced pitmasters tell you what they know and what they do, and then look at you with that expression that says: good luck. And even when the rain is beating against the windows, watching Chef’s Table Barbecue makes you crave a good barbecue, where everyone comes together, without frills, without complicated fuss. Maybe that’s the definition of good cooking television: that you understand that good food isn’t only about the food, but about the people who make it and the people who eat it. And that it makes you hungry, too. Your stomach is already rumbling during the trailer, so that’s a good sign.

The episodes will be available on Netflix from September 2.
