Cocada: the coconut macaroon of Latin America

cocadas latijns amerika

Coconut fan? Then this sweet treat was made for you! From Mexico to Chile: cocadas are sold throughout Latin America. Each country has its own way of making them, but they are equally popular everywhere. And we can see why.

They fly off the shelves of small street-food stalls and bakeries: cocadas. Sweets made from coconut flakes, sugar and ingredients that vary by country.

Cocada originally comes from Spain, but each country has given it its own twist. The Brazilian version, for example, is rectangular; in some countries they are as flat as a coin, while in Chile they are pleasantly round and resemble the coconut macaroon we know here in the Netherlands. In terms of flavour and texture, cocada is generally very similar to the coconut macaroon.

How do you make cocadas yourself?

Unfortunately, they are not available to buy in the Netherlands, so we have to make do with our own coconut macaroon—unless you make them yourself. And that is not nearly as complicated as you might think. This is a recipe for the rectangular cocada from Brazil. Is that not enough? Then follow this recipe for cocadas with chocolate and dulce de leche.
