Contagious: seeing faces everywhere – and these are the funniest

Gezicht-hoofd-Favorflav

A screaming bell pepper, a laughing cup of hot chocolate: suddenly you see a face in your food. It even has a name: pareidolia. Would you simply eat this food with a little face on it? Or would you rather not eat anything that stares at you?

Recognizing a face in the front of a car, in a sliced bell pepper or a pastry is called pareidolia. According to Japanese researchers, it is a kind of automatic response by the brain, which automatically makes connections where there aren’t always any. Some people are better at it than others, and the University of Tokyo studied this. They had students look at random patterns, and also gave the participants a personality test. What did they find? Neurotic people recognized faces more often than people who were completely emotionally stable.

Test yourself

So these photos are a test: how neurotic and unstable are you? Do you see little faces, or do you simply see a frying pan, a potato and a sweet bun?
