In the days after the hospitality industry was shut down because of the coronavirus, many hospitality entrepreneurs, sometimes in a rush, set up a delivery service or came up with other solutions to keep their businesses running. But now, a few weeks later, it is clear that an increasing number of hospitality businesses cannot survive the coronavirus crisis.
On Tuesday, the cabinet announced that the measures against the spread of the coronavirus would be extended through April 28, 2020, meaning that restaurants must also keep their doors closed at least until then. A disaster for the hospitality industry.
Of course, there are (cautious) success stories during these insane coronavirus times. Such as RIJKS*’s delivery meal and Loetje Drive In. But the coronavirus misery is far greater. More and more restaurants are stopping their delivery meals (such as hamburger restaurant Ter Marsch & Co) and are even going bankrupt. Two weeks ago, Koninklijke Horeca Nederland (KHN) estimated the damage for hospitality entrepreneurs at around 5.1 billion euros, and this amount will only increase.

The curtain has fallen, for example, on Jamie Oliver’s two restaurants, Jamie’s Italian in The Hague and Jamie’s Italian in Rotterdam’s Markthal. ‘The lack of revenue due to the coronavirus crisis in recent weeks and the lack of revenue in the coming weeks, possibly even months, combined with the continuing fixed costs, has meant that we see no future for our restaurants,’ said the management of Jamie’s Italian. The two restaurants are being closed immediately.
Best Vegetable Restaurant
Two days earlier, Niven Kunz’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Restaurant Niven, in Rijswijk was declared bankrupt. Niven earned a Michelin star at the age of 24, and his restaurant was named Best Vegetable Restaurant for no fewer than four consecutive years. Restaurant Taste Bij Dirk in Den Bosch has also filed for bankruptcy, as have several Subway locations. And this is only the beginning…
