De Foodhallen coming to Rotterdam

The owners of De Foodhallen in Amsterdam will open a second location in a few months in a monumental building on the Wilhelminakade in Rotterdam. With its own look and character to match the port city. This is where you’ll spend your sultry summer evenings with lots of delicious food.

The idea is for the selection to be as diverse as possible, featuring successful established hospitality entrepreneurs and ambitious newcomers. This way, De Foodhallen appeals to a broad target audience: from Rotterdam residents and day-trippers to office workers stopping by for a quick lunch. Just as in Amsterdam, it’s a social concept: an open space where you can eat, talk and enjoy yourselves together until late in the evening.

De Foodhallen is not the first food hall in Rotterdam. There are already Markthal, Fenix Food Factory and Marché010, so what is the added value? According to co-owner Chong Chu, these businesses can easily coexist because they serve different segments. Markthal, for example, is mainly focused on shopping. The Fenix Food Factory is more raw and mainly focused on artisanal products. And Marché010 is primarily an accessible fresh market for local residents. At De Foodhallen, everything revolves around food and drink, and therefore direct consumption. ‘I genuinely think we’ll strengthen rather than compete with one another,’ says Chu.

Coming soon

De Foodhallen will open sometime this summer on the ground floor of the monumental ‘Pakhuismeesteren’. An exact opening date has not yet been announced. The upper floors of the building are currently being converted into a hotel by the Spanish hotel chain Room Mate. The space where De Foodhallen will soon be located is still empty: the stands and interiors still need to be built (naturally, designed in Rotterdam) and 15 more entrepreneurs need to be recruited.
