Delhaize Experience at AH
For a long time, many Dutch foodies hoped that Delhaize would come to the Netherlands. The Belgian supermarket has a culinary flair that makes Dutch supermarkets look rather meagre.
When it became known that, instead, the Dutch grocer Albert Heijn was going to merge with the flamboyant Belgian supermarket giant, that was reason for both hope and fear. A frequently asked question was: “Will Appie now also have live lobsters?” But at the same time, there was great fear that the Belgians would get the short end of the stick and, just like the people from Zaandam, would mainly start watching the pennies.
Octopus Arms
Perhaps the latter will not be so bad after all. Recently, we thought we had already seen some typical Delhaize products cross the border to the north. Or did the vacuum-packed octopus arms found in both stores come from the Zaandam kitchen?

This week, it was announced that Appie is going to send a group of customers to Delhaize to see which products they would like to see return on Dutch soil.

Live Lobsters
A dream for the average Dutch foodie. Lobster in the shopping basket to begin with, but alive as well. Even if AH only did it at Christmas, we would already be very happy.
Live oysters, razor clams and other seafood
The same goes for the live oysters & co. And Delhaize even offers its oysters in different grades of freshness.
Delhaize Artisan Mayonnaise
With the Belgian sauce brand D&L (Devos&Lemmens) on AH’s shelves, we really have nothing to complain about. But Delhaize’s artisan house mayonnaise in that preserving jar goes particularly well with homemade fries.
Butter, Butter, Butter
When you look at the butter section at AH, you see margarine and low-fat margarine in all sorts of varieties. Alongside some own-brand butter and a few other spreadable options. Then there is Delhaize. It does not even sell the inferior product known as low-fat margarine. Instead, its refrigerated section contains, among other things, Bruges butter rolls, Ardennes buttermilk butter and beurre de baratte with Guérande salt from Isigny Sainte-Mère.
Come on in, Delhaize.
