Delicious! Albert Heijn launches The Dutch Weed Burger and Weed Dogg

From a self-built cargo bike, Mark Kulsdom sold more than a million Dutch Weed Burgers to fans all across Europe; from London and Paris to Stockholm and Berlin. With sales at major festivals such as Lowlands and Mysteryland, the burger quickly became a true cult hit. And now that all festivals are hanging by a thread, there is still some good Weed Burger news, because Albert Heijn has embraced this delicious burger. Oh yes!

It’s a great story. In 2012, the founders of The Dutch Weed Burger, Lisette Kreischer and Mark Kulsdom, travelled to New York City to discover the vegan food culture. Mark made a documentary about it—and the idea for The Dutch Weed Burger was born. With sales at major festivals such as Lowlands and Mysteryland, the burger quickly became a cult hit and one of the first bridges between the vegan avant-garde and the mainstream.

Smokey sausage
Alongside the burger, they are now launching something new: the Weed Dogg; a tasty sausage made from, among other things, peas, oyster mushrooms and two beautiful types of seaweed: Dulse and sea lettuce.
Getting high on your own supply?
The big question, of course, is: is there actually weed in the burgers and sausages? Uh, no. There is seaweed. And it is a source of vitamins, minerals, omega fatty acids, iron, calcium, iodine and protein. In addition, the seaweed enhances the flavours of other ingredients and adds a delicious umami taste. Seaweed farming in salt water also requires hardly any drinking water and does not take up precious agricultural land, making it a highly sustainable food source.
On the barbecue
From this week onwards, the Burgers & Doggs will be waiting for you in the chilled section of 300 AH stores across the Netherlands. They come in packs of two, for less than four euros, and the QR code on the packaging shows you exactly how to prepare them at home. Combine the burgers and sausages with potatoes and vegetables, throw them on the barbecue, or eat them wherever you like!
