Dirty plastic cutting boards: how to get them really clean again

Plastic cutting boards are cheap (compared to their wooden counterpart) and require little maintenance. A board that can simply go in the dishwasher is ideal. But despite lasting for years, the board can still become discolored. Here’s how to remove those stubborn stains from your board.

Cleaning dirty cutting boards

We know: turmeric is a bitch. Red fruit, too, or green herbs—and that gravy from that juicy, seasoned piece of chicken breast most of all. Fortunately, there is also a simple household cleaning method for keeping your boards brilliantly white.

What am I saying? Two effective methods, and here they are:

Method 1: with baking soda

Mix 3 tablespoons of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of dish soap and 1 to 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide (available at the drugstore) in a small bowl. Spread the mixture over the stains and leave it to soak in overnight. The next morning, you’ll see that the stain has been absorbed into the cleaning mixture. Rinse the board with warm water and a little dish soap, and it will be sparkling clean again.

Method 2: with cleaning vinegar

This method requires a little more work. First, soak the board in some water with cleaning vinegar, or spray it with some hydrogen peroxide. Let it soak for about 5 minutes, then rinse the board. Next, make a paste with 1 part baking soda (you really can’t do without it in any household, as you can see), 1 part salt and 1 part water, and scrub the stains off the board with it. If the stains aren’t particularly stubborn, you can skip the soaking, but it does make the board extra clean.
