Do you know this hack for draining pasta?

pasta koken pan water

TikTok has added an entire medium where huge numbers of people share—and learn from—useful tips. Removing those stringy bits from chicken breast, making dalgona coffee—all learned from the platform that many people know only as an inspiration tool for when you’re heading to the club. One of the latest hits: a pasta-draining method that’s simple yet surprisingly effective…

The man who came up with this and calls himself Ensee on TikTok says he actually drained the pasta this way by accident, because he got distracted when the phone rang. Suddenly he noticed that he was holding the colander the other way around, but it turned out to work so well that he now insists: Draining pasta into a colander is wrong. Draining pasta onto a colander is right.

Pasta revelation?

Naturally, people had plenty to say in the comments. Brilliant, some thought, with one fan claiming that he (or she) had already learned more from TikTok than they ever had at school. A little concerning… There were also disapproving but funny reactions such as: “No, it simply belongs in the colander, but you do you.”

What do we think? First, we’ll let all the Italians have their say, but then: this obviously only works if you have a colander that fits your cooking pot perfectly. We also believe in the “plenty of water” theory, so in a pot that’s on the small side you can only make a small amount of pasta anyway—for, say, a toddler. With larger pots and a standard-sized colander that probably doesn’t fit exactly on top, this is pretty dangerous. But what concerns us most: is there actually a mug or bowl at the bottom of the sink to catch that liquid gold that is pasta cooking water??!!
