The hack for getting those white stringy bits out of your chicken breast

American Mandy Klentz pretty much broke the internet with her hack for removing that white, slimy string (also known as a tendon) from a chicken breast.

When I once learned to prepare chicken Surinamese-style, I became aware for the first time of the ‘stringy bits’ attached to some pieces of chicken. “You cut those off,” my Surinamese cooking teacher (who was also my sister-in-law at the time) told me.
“And then you have to wash it in vinegar, otherwise your chicken smells lala.” Lala is a particular smell; I can’t explain it, but it definitely doesn’t smell nice. Whether it actually has anything to do with those tendons, I honestly don’t know, but anyway, my task was clear: the slimy white bit had to go.

Anyway, two hours, five kilos of chicken and a bowl full of snipped-off white stringy bits later, I was finally done. If only I had seen Mandy’s hack back then—it would have saved me a whole lot of time and effort (and a broken pair of scissors). In a TikTok video, Mandy shows that you only need a fork.
You place the tendon between the tines of the fork and pull on it (using some kitchen paper if necessary to counter the slipperiness), then pull the entire tendon through the middle of the fork. And voilà, Mandy pulls the whole tendon right out of the meat. No mess, no hassle. Ready to cook straight away.

Chicken lady
Funny enough, Mandy had simply found the trick on Google. “I wanted to know how to easily remove those tough pieces from chicken. When the trick worked, I was so surprised that I made a video of it on TikTok,” she tells Bored Panda. And apparently, she wasn’t the only one who thought this was a brilliant trick. Jokingly, Mandy now calls herself the ‘TikTok chicken lady’.
