Do you love Rum and Limoncello? Then you definitely have to try this drink with Moretta and Fiorito

Okay, admittedly, the summer weather really isn’t cooperating. But when the sun does come out, I have the ultimate cocktail recipe for you. The Italian Connection is made with Rum and Limoncello and is an ideal drink for summer days. Refreshing, effective and simple to make—believe me: you want this!

Rum and Limoncello—I love them! And I’ve found something really fun: a Rum liqueur and a Limoncello, both made in the Netherlands, with Italian roots. Here’s the story:
Fiorito Limoncello
After visiting their family in Sicily, brothers Benno & Franco started making traditional, handmade Limoncello from organic lemons at their kitchen table when they returned to the Netherlands, based on an old family recipe. Initially a hobby, things changed when they won a silver medal at the International Wine & Spirits Competition in 2011. The brothers closed the doors of their office to pursue their Limoncello dream. With rapper and entrepreneur Jorik Scholten, also known as Lil Kleine, on board, Fiorito is really taking off.

Moretta Covalo
Moretta Covalo is a Rum liqueur based on a centuries-old recipe, with the dark notes of Rum, the kick of Brandy, a hint of fresh anise and a generous dose of Dutch craftsmanship. Until recently, Moretta Covalo was only produced and consumed in the Italian port town of Fano, where the recipe was once created by local fishermen. Ramon Covalo created his own version of this liqueur together with master distillery Herman Jansen in Schiedam. The result: another special Dutch product with Italian roots!
In Italy: in coffee
Traditionally, Moretta Covalo is drunk combined with espresso and a twist of lemon peel: Caffè Covalo, the perfect ending to lunch or dinner. And if you have a day off, why not do something crazy and enjoy a coffee with a splash of Italy at another time of day.
You can also drink Moretta Covalo neat, on the rocks—which I wouldn’t do during the day, though 😉
- On the rocks…
- Of in je koffie!
Personally, I think Moretta is a great addition to a cocktail, such as the Italian Connection. The name isn’t accidental, because this cocktail combines the two delicious Dutch liqueurs with Italian roots in one cocktail. It doesn’t get better than this! Fréderique from Perfectly Balanced Cocktails came up with the recipe. Fresh, creamy, easy to make and above all incredibly delicious!
How to make an Italian Connection
Mix the Limoncello, lemon juice and sugar syrup and pour into a beautiful glass. Shake or whisk 30 ml heavy cream with 20 ml Moretta Covalo until light and airy, then pour it into the glass over a spoon so you get two beautiful layers. Finish with some lemon zest. Close your eyes and you’ll feel like you’re in Italy… Perfecto!

You can find a bottle of Moretta Covalo at the liquor store for less than twenty euros (50 cl, 24% alcohol), and online, for example at Drankgigant. A bottle of Fiorito (50 cl, 31% alcohol) costs just over twenty euros at Gall.
