Thirsty tales

For limoncello fans: you can now buy orangecello

Orangecello-Favorflav

Three clever students from the University of Amsterdam are deeply frustrated by food waste in the hospitality industry. Not in the kitchen, but behind the buffet, kilos of food end up in the bin – namely orange peels. They can do something with those, but what?

Stijn, Branco and Luc have spent the past few months working on their own business, Dik & Schil, alongside their studies. Armed with a vegetable peeler, they tackled kilos of orange peels, which they were able to collect for free from various hospitality businesses in Amsterdam. And we’re not talking about one or two kilos: after a busy Saturday, they collect as much as 65 kilos of orange peels from places such as Pllek. They use those peels to make Orangecello, a variation on Limoncello.

Amsterdam isn’t Italy

The men do things just a little differently from the usual Italian method. The orange part of the peel is also used in the distillation process, at an artisanal distillery in Amsterdam-Noord. The result: a bright orange, fresh and fruity tipple – perfect for cocktails, according to the industrious students. Their bottle is available from liquor stores and restaurants in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht, and can be ordered online.
