Heinz comes up with ketchup ice cream—is the world going crazy?

Heinz ketchup, then called ‘catsup’, has been available in the United States since 1870. And Henry Heinz came up with those 57 varieties in 1890 to emphasize just how versatile his tomato sauce really was. But making ice cream with that fantastic tomato sauce too? Old Henry would turn in his grave.

We can only point to Ed Sheeran as the culprit behind this idea. There are more Heinz fans, but singer Ed takes the cake with a tattoo of a ketchup bottle on his forearm and the personal Edchup bottles, which always accompany him on tour. When he performed in Dublin again in 2018, two ice cream shops in Ireland developed a ketchup ice cream as a tribute. Everyone with a concert ticket could come and get a scoop for free. Tasty? Only die-hard Sheeran fans took the plunge; after that, the tomato ice cream quickly disappeared from the display case.

Still, that Irish invention must have given the people at Heinz an idea. The manufacturer is launching a package containing all the ingredients needed to make ketchup ice cream at home. In their infinite wisdom, they have also decided that barbecue sauce ice cream and mayonnaise ice cream are good ideas. Packs for cocktail sauce ice cream and salad dressing ice cream can also be ordered through the webshop. Can’t place an order? Heinz thought of that too: they are sharing the recipe for ketchup ice cream online. Will you make it?
How to make ketchup ice cream
- Chill all the ingredients in the refrigerator for at least an hour.
- Combine everything in a bowl and mix at low speed.
- Once the ingredients are combined, increase the speed. The mixture will thicken.
- When it is firm enough for you to hold the bowl upside down without the ice cream mixture falling out, you are done. Spoon it into a freezer container and let it set in the freezer for at least another three hours.
