Don’t Be a Jerk: 10 Things You Shouldn’t Do or Say in Hospitality

Hospitality is our best friend. And friends should be treated well, right? Some people apparently think differently, as this list of annoyances from hospitality staff who anonymously spill the beans shows.

Scrooge comes to dinner – what a windfall!

‘That’ll be 60.82, would you like to pay by card?’
‘Yes please, just make it 61 euros.’
And then you’re still supposed to be grateful for what you get, because you should never look a gift horse in the mouth. Pfffff….

Shouting at the top of your lungs: no

You’re busy carrying a full tray when someone suddenly starts shouting at the top of their lungs. Or even worse: snapping their fingers. Hello, it’s 2024. Just politely ask what you want; there’s really no need for finger-snapping or shouting.

A child can do the laundry (but preferably do it at home)

It’s lovely that your child knows the difference between risotto and pasta carbonara. In fact, I wish I’d known that as a child—this kid eats well at home! But from now on, please let them place the order themselves; it takes quite a lot of time otherwise. Especially when your child forgets the order and has to ask all over again. Super cute, but not when it’s absolutely packed.

Get a room pls!

How cozy, all those Tinder dates. Especially after a few too many drinks. Swipe, swipe, oh yes, we have a match! As the evening progresses, things get increasingly intimate and clingy. A classic case of ‘get a room.’

Demanding

Those people who think they’re God. You’re still a guest in a restaurant, so behave normally. Don’t wave your napkin at me, and don’t say your wine glass needs to be fuller because you’re the one drinking it. The customer is king, but God? My God… some people…

Everyone’s a wine expert

A nice bottle of wine is part of the experience for many guests. But I had no idea there were so many wine experts. Especially men. They just keep smelling, swirling and tasting. Oh, the wine is corked? And you don’t like Chardonnay because it’s too common for you, but you’d like a little Chablis? The French wine made from Chardonnay… Sure thing, coming right up, cheers!

Foaming at the mouth

‘One delicious cappuccino for madam.’ And then ten minutes later, when the coffee is practically gone, they say the milk wasn’t frothed properly. From now on, say so immediately if you’re not satisfied. I’ll happily make you a new coffee. Complaining afterwards, when everything is gone, sometimes makes me storm to the back foaming at the mouth.

Ingredient check

You’re going out for a delicious meal; you’d think it would be pure enjoyment. But there are always people who ask about every ingredient in every dish on the menu. And by every ingredient, I mean ALL the ingredients. Understandable if you have an allergy, but there are also people who simply can’t make a choice and want to tick off the contents of every dish endlessly. Argh!

What the farmer doesn’t know…

Those types who don’t like anything. And then they order things—you really wouldn’t believe it. ‘Can I have a Caprese sandwich without mozzarella, pesto and tomato?’ Sure thing, shall I add a glass of milk without milk to wash it down?

Lingering guests

People who have finished eating, order nothing else, but still keep sitting there. You’ve dropped several hints, the restaurant is practically empty, but they refuse to leave. I WANT TO GO HOME. Good night!
