Research published in Neuroscience Research shows that eating camembert may help prevent memory problems and even Alzheimer’s disease. In other words, it could potentially help combat cognitive decline. Good news, right?

Magical compound

The study was conducted on mice that followed a high-fat diet. Such food normally worsens their memory and cognitive abilities. But after the mice had eaten camembert, their brain functions appeared to improve. For example, they were able to recognize new things and places much faster.

How is that possible? According to researchers, it has to do with the compound myristamide. This is a substance that does good things for your brain. Myristamide does something special: it helps another substance in the brain, BDNF, grow. This substance protects your brain and helps brain cells communicate better with one another, improving your memory and cognitive abilities. Researchers observed that in the mice, a small amount of myristamide (10 mg per kilogram of body weight) was already enough to improve cognitive performance.

Off to the cheesemonger

As we all know, a high-fat diet is not good for us. Eating a lot of fat over a long period can eventually even cause diabetes, obesity and heart disease. This research shows that camembert may help counteract the negative effects of a high-fat diet on the brain. Remarkable, right?

According to the researchers, more research on this subject is needed. So far, the mice were the only test subjects. To be continued, then. But you know what? The first results are in. So we see a very good reason to head to the cheesemonger right now. We do hope camembert continues to exist, though, because in France they’re a little worried about that
