Easy and incredibly delicious: these garlic cheese breadsticks

Knoflook kaasstengels

Craving something easy and comforting to snack on with drinks? Something a little more fun than simply opening a bag of whatever, but not so complicated that you’ll be busy for hours with, well, say, making deviled eggs? And perhaps the biggest bonus of all: it involves MELTED CHEESE? Then this is highly recommended: homemade garlic cheese breadsticks!

Super easy, warm, cheesy, with a kick of garlic and some chili flakes: can’t you already picture an ice-cold beer next to them? Or a glass of full-bodied red wine? Come on over; I’m sitting on the couch with these guys within easy reach…

Garlic and bread are always a good idea

Old-school garlic bread is already a well-known hit, of course, but with melted cheese and spicy chili flakes in the mix, this is also something you can use to impress in no time—even if it’s just yourself! And because you make it with ready-made dough, while the other ingredients require remarkably little attention too, it’s genuinely ready in about fifteen minutes.

How to make garlic cheese breadsticks

  • Preheat the oven to 200° C.
  • Finely chop or grate two cloves of garlic and place in a small bowl.
  • Add 2 tbsp olive oil, 1/2 tsp dried oregano, 1/2 tsp dried basil or other Italian herbs, and 1/4 tsp dried chili flakes.
  • Mix well.
  • Take a roll of ready-made flammkuchen dough and spread it out, or use a roll of pizza dough, roll it out and shape it into a rectangle by stretching it slightly.
  • Drizzle some olive oil onto a baking sheet that can accommodate the dough, and spread it over the sheet with a pastry brush.
  • Place the dough on the baking sheet and stretch it a little if necessary so that it reaches close to the edges.
  • Brush the dough with the garlic oil.
  • Sprinkle about 300 g grated cheese (grated mozzarella works too, but make sure it isn’t too wet) over the dough, and place the baking sheet just above the center of the oven.
  • Bake for about 15 minutes, until the dough is light golden brown and the cheese has melted and is bubbling.
  • Remove from the oven, slide onto a large cutting board, and cut the two dough halves into strips about 3 cm wide using a knife or pizza cutter.
  • Serve immediately!

Feel like dipping too? (Yes, of course.) Leftover tomato sauce works perfectly in a small bowl. Or try a simple mixture of 1 tbsp mayo, 1 tbsp Greek yogurt, 1/2 clove grated garlic, and some of the same dried green herbs, plus a squeeze of lemon juice. Party time! Even when you’re on the couch by yourself!
