Eddie’s food dilemma: can you put ketchup on a croquette?

Adeline (nickname: Eddie) loves food, lots of it and often, both at home and out. Usually, that goes well, but sometimes it doesn’t. In the series Eddie’s food annoyances, you can read about the latter. This time, a dilemma: is ketchup on a croquette actually acceptable?

At the coffee machine, the conversation turned to the croquette. You’d think the discussion would be about mayonnaise or mustard on top, or whether you eat it with or without one of those soft white bread rolls.
But no—suddenly someone started talking about ketchup on a croquette, and now I’m honestly a little confused.
Ketchup? On a croquette?!
A refined layer of French mustard on your croquette? A resounding yes. A generous smear of mayonnaise on your white roll under the croquette before you mash it up a little? I might even like that better. But ketchup? On a croquette?! I’ve never heard anything so strange. Except, that is, pineapple on your pizza, but let’s not get into that, because it’s dividing our society even further than it already is. Who are these people who dare put ketchup on a croquette? I’ve never met such a daredevil in real life.
Or so I think, because maybe they do it secretly. So as not to confuse people like me.
Fine with noodles
Even though, to be completely honest, it doesn’t sound remotely appetizing to me, there’s truly nothing I find more annoying than getting comments about what I eat. I love a thick layer of butter under my peanut butter, and I immediately silence anyone who questions this combination. Just as I find ketchup over my noodles absolutely delicious. Actually, maybe I don’t like noodles at all—that’s another way of looking at it. Could the same be true of people who put ketchup on their croquette? And pasta with ketchup: is it a heavenly guilty pleasure or an absolute no-go?

A terrible dilemma
So this isn’t an annoyance we’re dealing with, but a terrible dilemma. Do we allow this oddity under the motto: don’t fuss, you’re allowed to eat whatever you want? Or do some flavor combinations simply go much, much too far? By now, I’m so under the spell of ketchup on a croquette that this weekend I was tempted to just try it. Is that how it goes for most people? Will I be asking for ketchup on my croquette next year with a straight face, because it’s so delicious?
I still have so many questions. What I do know, fortunately, is that this is the tastiest supermarket ketchup, as a major taste test revealed.
