13 supermarket ketchups tested: this is the winner
Snackspert may not be called Sauspert, but there are no snacks without sauces. So we also fully trust his judgment when it comes to sauces. Take the supermarket garlic sauce test; thanks to Eke Bosman, we now know which ones to bring home. In his latest test, he tastes 13 different types of supermarket ketchup. Let’s ketch-up, Snackspert: which one is the best?
It doesn’t matter whether you eat it with your fries, use it as a dip for your toasted sandwich or pour it over your pasta (although… pasta with ketchup causes quite a stir..); everyone has a bottle of ketchup in the fridge. Let’s see whether your choice comes anywhere near that of the real expert.
The top 13 best supermarket ketchups according to Snackspert
Snackspert knows what he’s talking about when it comes to ketchup. According to him, a perfect ketchup should ‘be lightly sweet, have a touch of acidity and a good tomato flavor’. We completely agree. Far too often, you taste ketchup that is overly sweet, much too sour or doesn’t even come close to tasting like tomatoes. That simply ruins your fries (or pasta). As far as we’re concerned, the texture is also important. It should be smooth and slightly creamy, not too runny or thick.
Snackspert brought 13 different types of ketchup home for the test. It’s a mix of store brands and well-known brands. What does he consider the right order, from tasty to… not so tasty?
- Heinz: still really delicious, actually
- Plus: very tasty, with lots of tomato flavor too. Good balance as well
- Dirk: quite tasty, but it has just a little too much salt
- Aldi: okay
- Jumbo: pleasant tomato flavor, but just a little too sour
- Lidl: quite tasty, but it does lean a little toward curry flavor
- Oliehoorn: quite okay
- Zaanse: tastes a little too much like tomato purée, unfortunately
- Albert Heijn: just okay
- G’woon: just a little too sweet and the consistency is slightly too lumpy
- Remia: not very good
- The Ketchup Club: not tasty at all, with a very strong onion flavor
- Hela: not tasty at all, and very bitter too
The winner: Heinz
So Heinz is the ultimate winner. In a way, we’re not hugely surprised, because Heinz is known worldwide as the ketchup brand. Quite a few viewers agree with Snackspert:

Sidenote: Heinz isn’t superior in every type of sauce. Snackspert was disgusted by their mayo mousse, for example. He gave it one star and called it a ‘terrible product’. So you’d better stick to ketchup, Heinz.
The missing brand
Thirteen bottles of ketchup is quite a lot. It’s no wonder Snackspert says after his test that he’s ‘going to make 300 toasted sandwiches’. Still, one brand appears to be missing, if we’re to believe the viewers: Verstegen. And especially their sugar-free ketchup. ”The sugar-free one from @verstegenprofessional is so delicious too! 😋 Heinz is on the table here for the fries that will be ready in 10 minutes. 🍟” writes @bonusvegan. @laura_catsandfood also says: ”Personally, I go for Verstegen’s, without added sugar. At first I thought it tasted like Heinz, until I had Heinz again later and then found it too sweet 😂”. @bloomi86 writes: ”Heinz is always the best ketchup! Although I also really like Verstegen’s 0% sugar version🔥”. Definitely worth trying!
