Mentioned remarkably often: filling a hollowed-out croquette. According to some of you, it’s even the tastiest way to eat a croquette. But there turns out to be much more deliciousness… Would you like to try one of these combinations?
Strange food from the past that you really enjoy
1. Fried cracklings with syrup
Karla: ‘Fry cracklings and let them harden again, on rye bread and then syrup on top, delicious….’ Salty and sweet = always good.
2. Fried liver sausage with syrup
Henriette: ‘What about fried liver sausage with syrup! Also delicious on a toasted sandwich!’ Yes, we can understand that one too. Although we’d rather go for a sandwich with aged cheese and syrup.
3. Cheezer
Emiel: ‘A Cheezer from the ’90s; cheese in a pita bread, with jam and then briefly in the oven.’ Hmm, definitely worth trying!
4. Apple-and-egg
Brigitte: ‘Egg with apple and sugar. Fry pieces of apple, pour beaten egg over them and let it cook, but so it’s still creamy. Then sprinkle “kinnekessuiker” on top and dab it up and eat it with a slice of bread.’ Really?
5. Spoetnik!
Lisette: ‘Evaporated milk, a spoonful of sugar and top it up with cola or soda water. Pure childhood treat.’ Only when we have a really bad hangover. Or is that actually what gives you one?
6. Hackfleisch mit zwiebeln
Nico: ‘A bread roll with raw minced meat, pepper and salt, chopped onion and a boiled egg on top. Delicious! And optionally mayonnaise and ketchup on top as well.’ Steak tartare on bread, why not?
7. Smoothie
Rona: ‘A lightly beaten egg with milk and sugar. And then drink it. Delicious.’ We’d rather fry it!
8. Special split pea soup
Annemieke: ‘Split pea soup and bread with speculaas on the side. Really delicious!’ Well then!
9. Chocolate kiss sandwich
Birgit: ‘A hard German bread roll with a flattened chocolate kiss.’ What a treat! We immediately get this one!
10. Spaghetti with sausage
Sjaan: ‘Push spaghetti through pieces of sausage and then cook it so the spaghetti is inside the sausage. And then ketchup on top!’ Does this fall into the category of ‘relationship red flags’?
11. Cheese-string soup
Wally: ‘That sweetish Chinese tomato soup from Cup-a-Soup in a mug, then stir pieces of cheese through it and spoon all those lovely melted cheese strings into your mouth, yum.’ Sorry, we’re out at Cup-a-Soup…
12. Balkenbrij
Ana: ‘Balkenbrij fried until crisp on a slice of white bread.’ Classic!
13. Sweet-and-sour cheese sandwich
Silvana: ‘Cheese with chocolate spread and pickle on white bread.’ For fans of sweet-and-sour combinations.
14. Sweet rice
Kimberly: ‘Rice with butter, sugar, cinnamon and currants.’ Oh yes! This brings back good memories! I’m making that tonight!
15. Fried canned luncheon meat
Wendy: ‘Thick slices of canned luncheon meat dipped in egg and breadcrumbs, then fried and served like a hamburger on a bread roll.’ Canned luncheon meat? We had to look this one up. Boterhamworst, then. In the Dordrecht dialect.
