Strange foods we used to absolutely love

We all have those things we used to eat and absolutely loved, but now raise our eyebrows at. I used to eat fried egg with ossenworst and make toasted sandwiches filled with cheese and Bolognese-flavored chips.

But compared with what some other people manage to eat, it’s really not too bad. How do you even come up with this?! Number 3 actually sounds delicious to me, so I’m going to try that today.

Strange eating habits from the past

1. Cold, uncooked frikandel
Ingrid: ‘A cold, defrosted, uncooked frikandel – it was cooked in the factory, so it isn’t raw – with warm satay sauce! And then, for dessert: chocolate custard with pieces of Granny Smith apple, yummy, yummy!’ No thanks, Ingrid, not even if I were pregnant!

2. Cheese sandwich with plain chocolate sprinkles
Mieke: ‘Chocolate sprinkles and cheese together on a sandwich—the crunch is so delicious! Hmm, I don’t know, couldn’t the crunch just come from sesame seeds or sunflower seeds on the sandwich?

3. Bread with fried potatoes
Wil: ‘Two slices of white bread with real butter, mashed fried potatoes and mayo in between. Delicious!’ Wil, I feel you, I’m going to make this tonight! With some crispy fried onions on the side.

4. Vegetable soup with mayo and curry
Coby: ‘Drink the broth from a hearty vegetable soup, then add pickles, mayo and curry to the leftover filling.’ An 8 for creativity, a 4 for execution.

5. Hollowed-out croquette with applesauce
Bianca: ‘Scoop out a croquette. Eat the filling and fill the remaining breaded shell with applesauce. Heavenly!’ No, thank you!

6. Peanut butter/salami toasted sandwich
Lisa: ‘A toasted sandwich with peanut butter and salami.’ I can understand warm peanut butter with chicken. But with salami?!

7. Bread roll with Danoontje
Biddy: ‘When I was little, I always ate soft white bread rolls at my friend’s house, spread with Danoontje.’ Didn’t you have any teeth yet?

8. Filled Liège waffle
Ed: ‘A Liège waffle, with the squares filled with curry sauce. Or spread with Russian salad. So delicious.’ I think I’m going to sit this one out, Ed…

9. Raw minced meat
Maja: ‘Ready-seasoned minced meat from the butcher… while shaping the meatballs to fry, I’d eat a piece raw with a little Maggi…’ I’m going to skip this steak tartare too.

10. Egg with sugar
Ilona: ‘Fried egg on white bread with brown sugar.’ I don’t even find this that strange. Japanese tamagoyaki—the egg on top of your sushi—is also seasoned with sugar, and I find that absolutely delicious. But sugar in your omelet is of course something else, especially since tamagoyaki also contains soy sauce and the sugar isn’t crunchy, as it is with Ilona’s egg. Still… I think it’s worth trying. What do you think?
