Everything in this store is dirt cheap and sometimes even free, because it’s at or just past its best-before date
The prices of groceries and other goods—this really is turning into a bit of a bad-news show, isn’t it? I also find myself blinking in disbelief every time I see the price tags on the shelves. Whether the price increases will come to an end soon remains to be seen, which is why this store is a lifeline for many.
Because many people are now having to be much more frugal. Budget recipes such as these lists of budget dishes with chickpeas or budget dishes with eggs can come in handy. And it’s even better when the products you cook with are heavily discounted, as is the extreme case here. You just need to know this first:
It doesn’t always have to be so cautious
The products sold here at the brick-and-mortar Datumvoordeelshop store in Almelo are (almost) at or just past their best-before date—the THT date. In many cases, this isn’t a problem at all. As the term suggests, a product is guaranteed to be good until at least that date, but it can still be fine for some time afterward. And they don’t only sell food, but also products such as toothpaste and plasters.
Use common sense
Is it permitted to sell products that are past their expiration date? It is, as long as this is done honestly, according to the store’s website. It’s also naturally important to keep paying close attention yourself and watch out for any signs of spoilage. Use your senses: check carefully for discoloration or mold, smell it, and only then taste a very small amount of something if you’re unsure.
THT or TGT
The use-by date is something else: the TGT date. This is often found on fresh products, and you really shouldn’t mess around with it. Especially if you are older or belong to a vulnerable group. They give it away
Datumvoordeelshop is therefore a godsend if you really need to watch your spending and don’t mind bringing home products that don’t need to stay in the pantry or refrigerator for long. We already saw a huge bargain in a photo: 10 cups of instant noodles for just one euro! They even give things away for free from time to time, such as mustard at the moment (while supplies last and with a maximum of 8 jars per person). Especially in light of the French mustard shortage, this is a fantastic offer.
A helping hand
We sincerely hope this helps people a great deal. And it wouldn’t surprise us if more stores like this opened in the current economy, so that hopefully everyone on a tight budget can still do their weekly grocery shopping.
