Face mask fashion for true foodies
Do those homemade face masks actually help? According to the RIVM, probably not, but you still have to wear one on public transport. So it might as well be as fun as possible. We’ve picked out a few tasty specimens for you, such as those from Katertje or culinary guru Meneer Wateetons.
Suddenly, so many face masks are appearing on Facebook and Instagram that we thought we’d take another look at the RIVM guidelines. Did we miss a press conference, and are these things suddenly mandatory? No, not quite. ‘Non-medical face masks offer the wearer very limited protection against infection,’ it says on their website. If you want to take the train or bus, you do have to wear one – probably because it looks funny, helps with morning breath and immediately solves a major public-transport problem: unappetizing eating on public transport.
Conversation starter
A face mask is therefore becoming standard attire. In that case, you’d rather wear one that looks a little cheerful. Meneer Wateetons – known for his kimchi and grill sausage workshops, and therefore certainly no stranger to exhaling strong smells – offers white face masks with six tasty designs through his website. The advantage? ‘Deliciously mysterious, nobody on the tram understands you. So it’s a guaranteed conversation starter,’ according to the man himself.
The metro is no slouch either
The people at GVB, Amsterdam’s public transport company, aren’t foolish either. These days, you can also buy face masks from the vending machine where, in the good old days, you could still occasionally get a Twix. Standing at the station with your chin bare? Luckily, Hema and Etos also stock face masks.
Fashion brands
Fashionistas want a designer face mask. Bas Kosters designed a tasteful face mask featuring his signature penis print, but they’re all sold out. French fashion brand Marine Serre offers fashionable masks with a filter for 250 euros. Each, yes. As true foodies, we’d rather spend our money on food. On Amazon, you can buy face masks featuring a hamburger, fries and a slice of pizza. The absolute best: the face mask from Katertje, bearing the words ‘Bring me wine’.
