FavorFlav’s Taste Test: Caramel Cream Puffs from Albert Heijn
It’s time for another Taste Test, because I’ve stocked up on the entire dessert range from Albert Heijn’s Excellent line. So I can already recommend the Speculoos log and the mini Dame Blanche bombes. And especially the Champagne sorbet, because the latter is a real winner in my opinion. And what do the caramel cream puffs taste like? I’ll try those out for you too.
The Caramel cream puffs from Albert Heijn cost €2.99 and can be found in the freezer section. To start with, I think the price is fine for the number of cream puffs (12 pieces). A little plus point already.
Caramel with popcorn: delicious!
Fun fact: the cream puffs aren’t only filled with caramel; they also have a layer of popcorn inside — and I found that not only original, but genuinely surprisingly delicious. You can really taste the popcorn, and it goes so well with caramel. Of course, that combination isn’t new: caramel popcorn has been around forever, but I’d never encountered it in the form of a cream puff.
Less successful: sticky
The downsides? Yes, there are some. You take them out of the freezer, but you really need to let them thaw properly before they’re enjoyable to eat. And that makes quite a mess because of the chocolate coating; it sticks to your fingers. And, to be completely honest, I don’t even think that chocolate layer is particularly necessary. It’s certainly tasty for the crunch , but in terms of flavour it doesn’t add much. I’d rather have a little more caramel in the cream puff (because some pieces are rather sparsely filled) and get the crunch from the popcorn.
How good would that be: not only having the popcorn flavour, but also a distinct crunch from it. Then this would get a solid 9/10. As it stands, the caramel cream puffs get a 7/10.
