FavorFlav’s Taste Test: mini bombe Dame Blanche

Albert Heijn, it has to be said; I’m extremely impressed with their range for the holiday season, especially the desserts. Because the Champagne sorbet is genuinely very good, just like the Speculoos log — although at €9.99, I think it’s a little on the expensive side. Will that winning streak continue with the mini bombe Dame Blanche?

They cost €5.49 for two and look fantastic, but do they taste just as good?
Golden trio
Dame Blanche naturally sounds very chic, but it’s the perfect simplicity that makes it work. A classic Dame Blanche consists of vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce and whipped cream. A golden trio, if you ask me. That warm sauce combined with the cold ice cream and then the whipped cream… Oh yes, that makes me extremely happy.
Mini bombe Dame Blanche
Unfortunately, Albert Heijn’s mini bombe Dame Blanche doesn’t have that wow factor; there’s too little chocolate sauce, and the chocolate coating is too thick. The ice cream sits on a cake base, which in turn is too thin. The proportions are off, and that’s a shame. In addition — although that’s understandable at this price — the ingredients simply aren’t flavorful enough to turn it into a genuinely good dessert.
Because that’s precisely what’s so important: the products you use have to be high quality, then a Dame Blanche shines through its simplicity. So: really good vanilla ice cream, freshly whipped cream, and chocolate for the sauce that’s of good quality.
Six-out-of-ten culture
And that’s why I give this mini bombe Dame Blanche a meager six out of ten; something I was extremely happy with during my high school years. And I actually get the feeling that Albert Heijn approached this dessert with a bit of that six-out-of-ten mentality too; they know perfectly well that they’re not winning any major prizes with it, but the little bombs look fun and for the price, that’s fine. In terms of looks, you’ll definitely impress people with this, but my advice is: do try to customize it a little yourself. For example, by using warm caramel sauce instead of the sauce that comes with it. And definitely add some whipped cream yourself.
That will easily take this dessert up to a 7.5. If only high school had been that easy.
