From new gem to old favorite: 5 of the best chip shops in Amsterdam

Par Hasard (1)

Few things can bring small happiness as quickly as a good portion of fries. Or a big bag of chips—anything goes! Golden brown with a crispy edge, dip them into a generous dollop of mayo (adventurous mayo is fine too) and wash it all down with a soft drink. Classic…

And if you happen to be looking for the tastiest fries in the capital, be sure to visit one of these spots. Whether you’re going for old-school mayo or feel like covering your entire portion with special toppings, there’s plenty of choice.

Freddy Fryday

These spots (one in East and one in West) belong to the relatively new ‘loaded’ school, although you can also order perfectly good basic fries with sauce and other classic snacks (bear claw, anyone?). Yes, the concept of loaded fries has been around for a few years, but it’s not yet as firmly established as, say, asking for patat oorlog at the counter and ordering a ‘Spicy Hoisinner’. At Freddy Friday, you get vegan mayo, hoisin sauce, sriracha sauce, sweet-and-sour red onion & cucumber, fried onions and parsley on your fries: seriously delicious!

Pont Neuf

In Amsterdam-Noord, Pont Neuf has two locations: one close to the ferry behind Central Station and one next to ice cream parlor IJskoud de Beste. At the latter, you can immediately get dessert once you’ve finished your fries! Good, thick Flemish fries—those will keep you busy for a while.

FavorFlav’s Sharon has been a huge fan for years, and rightly so—these fries are exceptionally good. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The entire menu is appealing and, of course, those fries are on it too, but they also have a friterie where you can pick up your order. Handy!

Grizzl

Great for all the people working hard at or passing through the Zuidas: at Grizzl, they can grab some fries between work or studying. The menu features fun, original burgers and bitterballen (meat and vegetarian), as well as various flammkuchen, but sometimes those fries are simply all you need to recharge and get back to it. Great place!

Vleminckx (de Sausmeester)

And to finish with the ultimate classic—which is grand despite being tiny in size: Vleminckx on Voetboogstraat in the heart of the city center. The queue immediately shows you where to go, and once that cone of fries is in your hand, you still have to escape the swarm of pigeons, but then you’ve got something special!
