Kitchen happiness isn’t about expensive kitchen appliances and exclusive knives. No, it’s the humble kitchen helpers that can be incredibly handy. Which items in the kitchen drawer make us as happy as an Easter egg here at the FavorFlav editorial team?
Courgette as spaghetti
Adeline: ‘Definitely the pan scraper. What is a person without one of those things for scraping the last bits out of a pan or pot? And I’m also a big fan of the Spirelli, even though it’s a damn nuisance to use, which is why I still buy pre-cut courgette. Forgive me.’
Clean hands
Sharon: ‘The garlic peeler. I love garlic, but the garlic press is, to put it mildly, not my friend. Am I ever glad I have this garlic peeler in my drawer. No more picking that sticky skin off the garlic, no more cleaning the garlic press and, above all, no more smelly fingers. Combine it with a garlic grinder and you’re all set. Oh yes, and my universal glass lid with a black silicone rim, which fits pans with diameters of 16, 18 and 20 centimetres respectively. Incredibly handy! Look, I’ll show you with my clean garlic hands.’
Keep the counter tidy
Lauretta: ‘I saw this at a friend’s house and ordered one straight away. No more pasta sauce or soup on your counter, hooray! What am I talking about? A Ravioli Spoon Holder.’
Cheese over pasta
Sabina: ‘Oh, come on! The Microplane grater, of course! Apparently there are haters who think it’s a useless thing, but I love it. Lemon zest! Grating ginger! A clove of garlic! Parmesan over pasta! Well, that’s basically all I use it for, but I’m very happy with it.’

Marcus: ‘‘May I nominate my wonderful potato masher? I can’t live without delicious, velvety smooth mash with lots of butter.’
Opening things
Delilah: ‘I think my oyster knife is my favourite kitchen thing. When it’s being used, it means someone is opening oysters for me, and that makes me disproportionately happy.’
