Help, We’re Out of Oat Milk!
‘A latte with oat milk, please!’ If there’s anything quintessentially Amsterdam-Zuid, it’s that order. But many coffee drinkers have recently been disappointed, because the oat milk was sold out again and again.
Oat milk is especially popular in Amsterdam, grocery delivery service Picnic noticed. Tout of Amsterdam’s work-from-home population has been making cappuccinos and lattes with oat milk in their own kitchens over the past few months. The special barista milk from Oatly, in particular, is impossible to keep in stock. Literally, because supermarket shelves were worryingly empty halfway through June, Het Parool reported. Not only do you have to get to Albert Heijn early in the morning, just after the new stock has been delivered, Makro and Marqt can’t keep up with demand either.
High demand
It has to do with supply problems at Oatly. Demand for oat milk has risen faster than Oatly’s factory can handle. Oat milk is in short supply not only in the Netherlands, but throughout Europe. That will soon change, Linda Nordgren of Oatly told Het Parool. Production is being increased, but she cannot yet say when oat milk will once again flow abundantly.
The plant-based milk is made in Vlissingen, where the Swedish company opened an additional factory in 2019. The Swedish factory steps in when Vlissingen cannot cope, but even that is not helping at the moment.
