High from Haribo? Police investigate cannabis in bags of sweets
First, Haribo bears gave you intestinal problems; now possibly a different kind of trip. Yep, Haribo is making headlines again. Cannabis has been found in the brand’s famous sweets, specifically the 1-kilogram bags of Happy Cola F!ZZ. Several people have become unwell after eating the sweets, reports the NVWA. And no, this is not a belated April Fool’s joke.
Happy Cola?!
Happy Cola F!ZZ normally guarantees sugar highs and childhood happiness. But things are a little different now. Cannabis was actually found in some bags of sweets, a spokesperson for the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority confirmed. Several people developed health complaints, including dizziness. One family that suddenly felt light-headed after snacking even called the police.
Haribo recall
The manufacturer quickly launched a recall. All bags with an expiration date up to January 2026 are being removed from the shelves. Do you still have one in your kitchen cupboard? Check your stock. Haribo warns that eating these sweets can lead to health complaints such as dizziness. And probably the munchies too. Maybe I’m speaking from experience.
How does cannabis end up in a cola bottle?
That is exactly what the police want to know too. The NVWA cannot yet say how many bags are contaminated or how this could have happened. One thing is certain: it is not a new flavour. Investigators are looking into whether the cannabis was deliberately added to the sweets. And that would be a truly sensational crime. Talk about cola with a kick.
A trip for the little ones?
The whole story raises quite a few questions. Because let’s be honest: these are sweets aimed at children. The mere suspicion that they contain THC (the psychoactive substance in cannabis) is enough to cause panic among parents and Haribo alike. The recall is therefore a clear attempt to limit the damage – and not just on the PR front.
Pandora’s box of sweets
This is not the first time Haribo has made negative headlines. Once, the internet went wild over the laxative effect of their sugar-free gummy bears. The reactions were legendary – and traumatic.
