Hmm… What?! You can buy doughnuts with pickles
The pickle – wrapped in a slice of salami or cheese – has long ceased to be that dull snack that goes around at a circle birthday party. Since pickler Kesbeke became hugely popular, so did the pickle. And so we see pickles everywhere. But really, literally everywhere. Including in your Dutch doughnut. Hmm, what? Indeed, you can buy Dutch doughnuts with pickles.
The pickle has acquired a bit of the mille-feuille effect. Because the mille-feuille also suddenly started appearing in all kinds of forms not so long ago. No one has forgotten the crompouce, and the frikanpouce (a frikandel–mille-feuille combination) still regularly appears in our nightmares. Are we in for equally bizarre creations with pickles? It certainly looks that way. After recently seeing the chocolate letter with pickle, the pickle-filled Dutch doughnut is now knocking at the door.

Dutch doughnut maker Nico Sterrenberg came up with the creation. It’s a Dutch doughnut filled with pieces of pickle. Mr. Kesbeke himself has already tasted the pickle doughnut and is – how could it be otherwise – enthusiastic. ‘It’s sweet, it’s soft and it’s sour, and it has a bit of a bite,’ the pickle king says of the deep-fried snack. Well, when your own product is used in it… It makes sense that you’re lyrical about it.

Reactions to the Kesbeke doughnut range from ‘you’re taking it too far’ to ‘April Fools’ Day has already passed’. ”The first thing I thought: April Fools’ Day has already passed, right? And the second: Is this a request from a pregnant woman with unusual eating habits? What will come next? A Dutch doughnut with green herring and raspberry sauce? Or with kale and pieces of caramel?” someone writes on Facebook. And also: ”You can put pickles in anything, but a lot of it probably isn’t edible” – which may also be a reference to the pickle chocolate letter. Plus, a call to stop the pickle mania. Before we go completely overboard à la the mille-feuille craze… Or have we already embarked on that path?

Still, there is also the occasional fan. She sums up her review in something you could just as easily read as a little love poem:

The Kesbeke pickle doughnut is available at Nico Sterrenberg’s Dutch doughnut stand in Schiedam. As far as we know, that’s also the only place where you can get one, so you can decide for yourself whether it’s worth the trip to Schiedam.
