Hoarded Mac burgers offered for big money in Russia

MacDonald’s decision to close its locations in Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine appears to be a bitter pill for many Russians. And as often happens when scarcity arises and something suddenly becomes highly exclusive: that drives the price up considerably.

And so a fierce trade has now emerged in purchased hamburgers, fries and even fries sauce and empty packaging (?) from MacDonald’s. If a Russian Irma Sluis had emerged, it wouldn’t have helped, because people have been hoarding heavily at the local Maccies, and the precious goods are spilling out of the refrigerators of several Russians at home, who then ask big money for them.

Worth its weight in gold

De Telegraaf reports that MacDonald’s hamburgers and meals are being offered for a fortune on the Russian auction site Avito. What should a bag with two hamburgers, two drinks and a cherry pie fetch? Bidding starts at 50 euros, please…

Pretending

The trade in empty packaging also appears to be lucrative: if, as a Russian fan of the Mac, you wanted to put your homemade mayonnaise in a Mc-branded sauce container (just for the ‘feeling’ or something?), the neighbour might be willing to supply you with one at an unfriendly price.

Burgerfest

On the internet platform Reddit, several Russian users have already posted photos of their refrigerators stuffed full of Mac burgers. The sharpest comment underneath, as far as we’re concerned? “It looks just like a party at the White House.” (During Trump’s time, we assume…)
