Make Your Own Burger Hack? McDonald’s Shares Tips

‘Customizing’ an order is something we can say with some certainty is a habit that blew over from America. Ever since Meg Ryan placed her order in the film When Harry Met Sally (watch that classic), not every hospitality worker went to work entirely relaxed, but it really took off in fast-food and coffee chains in the Netherlands. But McDonald’s now proves that it can work the other way around too.

It seems they have become so used to people ordering strange combinations that they decided to take a step toward those customers, seemingly playing right into their hands (for marketing purposes?). They are now promoting their own ‘Menu Hacks’ in America, where customers are supposed to order different items, take them apart themselves and then smoosh them back together in a new combination.

Bob the Builder
The promotion itself is currently only happening in America, but of course that doesn’t stop anyone in the Netherlands from starting this whole process of deconstruction and reconstruction too. A few examples: the ‘Surf + Turf’, where you order a Filet-O-Fish and a Double Cheeseburger and stuff the fish fillet between the burgerpatties.
Or the ‘Double Crunchy’, where you put Chicken McNuggets inside a double cheeseburger. They also suggest building a gigantic ‘Land, Air & Sea’ from a Big Mac, a McChicken and a Filet-O-Fish. The fourth (breakfast) tip can’t be recreated in the Netherlands because there is no Hash Brown (a kind of fried potato cake) on the menu here.
Hands-On
Could this be a way of encouraging customers to roll up their sleeves themselves and stop bothering McDonald’s employees with complicated requests? Apparently, it’s difficult for the kitchen to make invented burger combinations because the kitchens aren’t set up for that. The motto behind this McHack promotion is therefore “Order them by name, build them by hand”—in short: make it yourself.

Waste
Maybe this will inspire many people. Personally, I mostly have my doubts. What are you supposed to do with all those leftover bun halves? Throw them away? I find it hard to believe they would suddenly be happy if you ordered a Filet-O-Fish with just the bottom half of the bun, please and thank you. And in the photo of the burgers you have to order for that monstrously large (another question mark: who can finish that?) Land, Sea and Air burger, I count no fewer than seven bun components! Yet there are only three in the result. Call me an old fusspot, but surely that can’t be the intention? So many questions…
Anyway. The Crunchy Double still seems doable. And perhaps these tips from McDonald’s will now open up a world of happiness for many people. Or are these ‘hacks’ you’ve been doing yourselves for ages? In that case, you may actually be way ahead of your time!
