How to fry an egg in no time without a pan (= almost no washing up, YES)

Okay, frying an egg isn’t exactly rocket science. And your frying pan can get the job done pretty quickly too. But what if I told you there’s a method that requires zero effort, gets your egg in front of you even faster, and leaves you with almost no washing up? People, it’s possible: frying an egg in the microwave.

The microwave doesn’t exactly have the best reputation. If you say, as a foodie, that you love using the microwave, you’ll get some pretty strange looks. As if you’re admitting that you love cycling, but use an e-bike. You’re basically admitting that you like to keep things easy and quick, right? But really, what’s wrong with that? I mean, you can make so many surprisingly delicious things in the microwave. Toasted sandwiches, roasted nuts, crispy garlic; the list is endless. Today, we’re adding a fried egg to it. And we’re not ashamed!
Frying an egg in the microwave: here’s how
You can leave your frying pan in the drawer for this hack. Instead, grab two microwave-safe plates with slightly raised edges and proceed as follows:
1. Drizzle some olive oil onto one of the plates.
2. Crack your egg on top, just as you normally would over your pan. Lightly pierce the yolk.
3. Place the second plate or a microwave-safe lid over the plate with the egg. Put it in the microwave.
4. Cook your egg for 50 seconds to one minute at 50% of your microwave’s power. If the egg isn’t quite cooked to your liking yet, extend the cooking time by 10 seconds at a time. And there you have it: your fried egg!
Okay, your microwave probably won’t manage to create that crispy brown edge your pan can. But you’ll have a fried egg. Quick, easy, and without a dirty pan to wash.
Making an omelet in the microwave
You can make things even more exciting than a fried egg, because your microwave is also a great tool for making an omelet. Isn’t that an amazing hack when you have a massive hangover? You don’t have to play chef; you can simply be your lazy, hungover self. That alone is reason enough for everyone to have a microwave in the kitchen.
Be honest, are you secretly just as hooked on your microwave as we are?
